Mabon
Vicky Sparrow
Vicky Sparrow’s Mabon emerges from the autumn equinox, the seasonal shifting of ambiguous days where light gives way to darkness. A love poem and song – a musical, iterative text – Mabon is a work of (re-)visioning, a hopeful tract that travels with us as we move, at the demo, on the picketline, across the page.
Melancholic, playful, cursing, and visionary, the poem asks how we manage our desires in times of genocide and in the face of fascism, how we love fiercely in and alongside our political commitments, full-wheeling in the light.

‘should the poem be the noise of its own signal, or a social space in which down is just as good as up and turns like a life can into a song about fucking, heading north, with a bicycle on a train, inside the cycle of violence and in unpunctuated time, feeling the air getting cold but telling it like it is the way almost any poetry worth its salt that salts its wounds will do, then it will do what this beautiful, committed book does, knowing what a spiral is, and how to sing it like a cycle.’
